How do I know if I need a new roof?
The following is a list of signs for asphalt shingle that can indicate if you
need a new roof:
• Blistering
o Occurs most often when ventilation is inadequate o Can expose fiberglass
mat
and cause granule loss.
o Can be mistaken for hail damage.
• Damaged Flashing
• Buckling
• Curling of Shingles
• Algae Growth
• Missing Shingles
o Can be caused by improper fastening or exposure to high
winds.
• Missing Granules
o It is normal for a small percentage of granules to be loose, especially
after
recent application.
o Large amounts of granule loss can indicate defective materials or
shingles that
have reached the end of their useful life.
o Can be caused wholly or in part due to storm damage
• Rotting
o Caused by absorption of moisture by the mat
o Common problem with aged organic-based (non-fiberglass) shingles
• Ceiling Spots
• Significant wind, hail or other weather damage to portions of the roof.
o Not always visible from the ground or to the untrained eye.
o Light bruising from
hail damage becomes more evident over time and can develop
into holes in the
shingles after exposure to UV rays.
The following is a list of signs for cedar shake shingles that can indicate
if you need a new roof:
• Moss/Algae Growth
• Damaged Flashing
• Missing Shakes
o Can be caused by improper fastening or exposure to high winds
• Splitting
o Can be caused by water absorption in wood due to aging and/or inconsistent
materials
o Can be caused by impacts from hail
o Weathering and hail impacts can combine to form weather-assisted
splits
• Termite Damage
• Curling
• Rotting
The following are additional warning signs that might indicate you need a new roof.
• Missing, cracked or curling shingles
• Blistering or peeling paint
• Shingle, sheathing or siding decay
• Leakage in the attic after heavy rains
• Stains on interior walls or ceilings
• High energy bills
